Broad City (2014 - present): Stoner TV show review

As weed continues to become increasingly mainstream, we can expect to see more and more of it on television. Broad City is one such show; a comedy following the daily exploits of two young weed-loving females trying to make it in New York City.

The show was created by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, who are also the main stars. Broad City is based on their web series with the same name which they independently produced after Glazer received some less than savoury feedback for a project she was working on. Comedy Central first aired the show on January 22, 2014, and it’s now in its fourth season.

Broad City is essentially like Workaholics meets 2 Broke Girls, with its own unique and outrageous flair. It’s raw, bold, and hilarious; although once the character’s personalities and habits are fully established, the show could burn out - as is common with many situational comedies. But as long as the show’s writers keep the plots fresh and relevant, Broad City definitely has more staying power and comedic value than other shows with a similar premise.

Ilana and Abbi are one of the best pro-weed TV duos simply because they’re obvious and in-your-face about it, but they don’t carry along all the typical stoner clichés that are so overplayed and dragged out these days (think Disjointed, a Netflix series which was almost painful to watch at times with their stereotypical depiction of weed smokers and dispensary workers).

Not only are they our new cannabis heroines, but Ilana and Abbi are enviable in many other, relatable ways. They’re fiercely loyal to each other, refreshingly casual about sex and relationships, brave and adventurous, and always positive. The latter probably being the best thing about these two. Yes they’re upbeat and they always go with the flow, but there’s something more to them. They emit a positive energy which is apparent with the way they compliment anyone and everything, even those who attempt to insult them.

Even if you’re not that much in to weed, that’s a message anyone can get on board with. So if you have some extra downtime in the weekend, we highly encourage you to spend some time watching Broad City.
