Iran is known for its harsh stand on alcohol abuse but seems surprisingly tolerant towards cannabis. This means however, that technically any kind of possession of cannabis is still illegal in Iran and can still get you in serious trouble.
In the last few years, more news about the rise of cannabis usage by locals has hit the west. There have been some discussions in the government about official decrininalization or even the legalization of cannabis, but thus far nothing definitive has been changed.
