Is 710 the new 420?

Is 710 the new 420?
Adam Parsons

When the number 420 first became associated with cannabis, it was used to keep stoner endeavours discreet. Today, the connection between the number and weed is unbreakable, so it's a useless code for discretion, but still beloved. People use 710 in a similar way. That specific number, though, is only used to talk about weed concentrates.

You have heard of 420, but what about 710? 710 is rising in prominence, so we take a look at why. In the early days of weed's modern history, people wanted a way to refer to cannabis without alerting their parents, teachers, or bosses. For one reason or another, someone picked 420 as the code number. There's plenty of debate about who picked that number, or why they chose it, but it caught on like wildfire. It was effective at first, but the connection between 420 and weed would become one of the defining quirks of cannabis culture.

This popularity, of course, made it useless as a code term. That being said, it wasn't all for nothing. Now it's part of countless in-jokes amongst the stoner community, and people even celebrate April 20th as a cannabis appreciation day every year.

WHAT IS 710?

It's all a good time, but you'd think it'd mean that stoners would be done using numbers to talk about weed. Have you heard the number 710 around lately, though? If so, you might have heard some people talking about cannabis concentrates. They're more commonly referred to as dabs, oil, wax, shatter, etc., but they all fly under the same numerical banner.

"Finally", you may be thinking, "another way to talk about weed without being obvious!". Well, considering the fact we're writing an article about it, you shouldn't be surprised to learn that the secret's out. Don't be disappointed, though! In fact, you should celebrate it with all the other people who already honour weed concentrates on 7/10 (July 10th). Follow along with us, and we'll show you exactly how to do that!

710 IS THE NEW 420

So, as we mentioned before, there's a lot of debate over why 420 specifically was chosen as the "weed number", and what significance it had to the people who coined the term. Given how unknown those circumstances are, what made 710 stand out as the successor? Well, as silly as it may sound, it's because 710, when written on paper and flipped upside down, looks like "OIL". Oil, as we mentioned before, is one of the most popular names for cannabis concentrates.

Is 710 the new 420?

As with 420, no one really knows who first coined 710 as a weed-related term. Some old stoner you know might claim to have coined it, but the real answer is lost in time and memory.

WHY IS 7/10 DAB DAY?

Earlier, we also mentioned that people now celebrate all things oil/dab/wax related on 7/10. We should clarify, though, that the celebration happens on July 10th, rather than October 7th, since the term is believed to have originated in the United States.

At any rate, you still might be wondering why it's celebrated at all. After all, since 420 refers to weed in general, wouldn't you just have some concentrates on that day, too? Well, you may technically be right on that last point, but when has a stoner turned down an excuse to smoke more than usual? Offer a weed enthusiast a special day where they're encouraged to get high, and we can guarantee they won't pass it up. Do you need any more reasoning than that?

HOW TO CELEBRATE 710

Now that you're sold on the concept, it's time to plan your 7/10 celebration! As it turns out, there are a lot of fun ways to celebrate cannabis concentrates.

GROW HIGH-RESIN CANNABIS

If you want to get to the root of a good concentrate, just care for the roots of a high-resin cannabis plant! It's a lot of work, of course, but there's no better way to celebrate resin than extracting it from cannabis you grew yourself.

If you don't know what strains to start with, we suggest a plant bred to produce high amounts of resin. That factor is shared by strains like the aptly named Hash Plant, the potent 8-Ball Kush, the delectable Strawberry Shortcake, and many more. You can get great resin out of nearly any cannabis strain, though, so it all comes down to personal preference.

TRY DABBING CANNABIS CONCENTRATES

Taking a lot less time than growing your own flower to produce concentrates, it's easy to see why dabbing concentrates is the most popular way to celebrate 710: They're available in most dispensaries and coffeeshops, cheaper options are often available, and they can be enjoyed on the go if you have a vape pen! Just look at people on the street in the US or Europe, and you'll see people celebrating 710 every day.

TWAX A JOINT

While you've got dabs to celebrate, why not put them in and/or on a joint? That's essentially what it means when you say you're going to twax. It can involve dropping oil into the bud before you roll it up, rubbing it on the outside, or whatever else you can think of. There's really not much to it, and there are several ways it can be done.

SAVE THE DATE: 10TH JULY

Doesn't it feel good to have a whole new holiday to celebrate? Doesn't it feel even better to have that holiday be centred around concentrated weed resin? We think so too. Be sure to save the date, celebrate with friends, and check your local dispensary or coffeeshop for sales!
