Skunk 1: A Timeless Cannabis Superstar

Skunk #1

It's hard to find strains that have had a similar impact on the global cannabis scene as Skunk #1. It first emerged in the late 1970s and has been inspiring breeders ever since. Countless hybrids have been created using Skunk #1 as a base—a great testimony to the myriad of desirable features that this versatile strain possesses. Think old-school classic aromas that are pungent and instantly recognisable, paired with pleasant multifaceted effects and rewarding yields. Add the fact that it's easy to cultivate to the equation, and it's no wonder Skunk #1 has achieved such impressive popularity.

Genetic Background of Skunk #1

Careful selection of parent strains and several generations of breeding is the key to success in the world of cannabis hybrids; Skunk #1 is a perfect example of such rigorous attention to detail. Sacred Seed Co. created the variety using a legendary line-up of landraces, namely Afghani, Acapulco Gold, and Colombian Gold. Some sources say that their offspring has a slight sativa dominance, while others indicate it's a balanced hybrid. Either way, it's pretty close to that perfect balance between indica and sativa genetics.

Afghani

Containing 18% THC, this powerful indica stems from landrace varieties of cannabis that originated in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan, specifically the Hindu Kush range. The cultivar emerged in European and North American cannabis circles in the 1970s. Afghani offers sweet and earthy aromas, and its flowers produce mixed effects of deep relaxation and blissful euphoria. This superb variety also brought the famous Northern Lights to the cannabis market, serving as one of its parents. In the grow room, Afghani is a pleasure to cultivate and will produce good yields, even in the hands of beginner growers.

Acapulco Gold

Hailing from Acapulco, Mexico, Acapulco Gold has roots in Mexican landraces and is now considered a rare find. It is a sativa-dominant plant that energises and motivates users, adding a much-needed energy boost to their day. In terms of terpenes, these flowers have a sweet and spicy profile, often likened to honey or caramel with hints of bitter coffee.

Colombian Gold

Also a sativa landrace, Colombian Gold was discovered in the Santa Marta mountains of Colombia, hence its alternative monikers “Santa Marta Colombian Gold” and “Santa Marta”. Its flowers emit aromas of lime, spices, and skunk that gracefully swirl on the palate. As they do, users enjoy uplifting effects that make them feel active and focused, ready to take on the world with all its challenges. Users will also feel more sociable and talkative, which almost always results in fun sessions with friends.

Aroma and Flavour of Skunk #1

Skunk #1

Let's state the obvious first: This plant smells of skunk. Period. It does have other nuances in its terpene profile, however. Earthiness and fruit are detectable, but an unapologetic sour skunkiness dominates the mix. In terms of flavour, Skunk #1 serves up surprisingly sweet and fruity notes on the inhale. The specific terpenes responsible for these notes are myrcene, limonene, and pinene. The overall experience is that of enjoying an old-school classic cannabis strain of the highest quality—just like grandma used to smoke.

Potency and Effects of Skunk #1

Skunk #1 contains a moderate amount of THC, coming in at 16–20%. However, these buds produce a far from subtle effect. This variety will catapult you into your happy place in no time, lifting your mood and providing an energising cerebral buzz. At the same time, you’ll feel relaxed and at ease, but without experiencing drowsiness. On the contrary, you’ll become focused and ready to conquer your daily tasks. At higher doses, Skunk #1 becomes much more stoning—keep that in mind during your session.

Recreational Uses

Bring these buds to a social gathering of like-minded people and you’ll find the strain can help kick-start any party. Whether you're into giggles and silly jokes or more profound conversations, you'll feel a craving to socialise and chat the night away. The creative and focused effects will prove helpful when you want to get things done. If you find yourself a bit too relaxed, just let go and enjoy the soothing ride.

Medical Uses

Holistic marijuana users report that Skunk #1 does a good job of initiating the munchies. If you find your appetite lagging, fire up some of these buds to make your plate seem a whole lot more appealing. On the other hand, the elevating and soothing effects work well at lifting the spirits when you feel stuck in a mental rut.

Potential Side Effects

The usual side effects of smoking cannabis apply to Skunk #1. Users often experience cottonmouth and red and dry eyes at higher doses—nothing a glass of water and some eye drops won’t remedy. In terms of more unpleasant side effects, this variety may bring about feelings of unreasonable suspicion in some users, typically after smoking excessive amounts.

Growing Skunk #1

Growers will be happy to learn that this variety is ideal for those just starting their cultivation journey. This means novices shouldn't fear experimenting with Skunk #1, even for their very first project. More experienced cultivators are also sure to enjoy this undemanding plant and will be able to achieve excellent results thanks to their expertise. Plants are resilient to common moulds and pests, which makes them a good match for unfavourable climates. Its versatile and adaptable genetics allow Skunk #1 to handle a range of environments well, helping her to perform great both indoors and outdoors.

Indoor Growing Tips

One of the biggest challenges when growing Skunk #1 indoors revolves around her pungent smell. You’ll need to fit your growing space with a high-quality carbon filter to maintain discretion. Other than that, she'll sail through the growing cycle with minimal issues, reaching a height of 150cm when left untrained and completing the flowering phase in 8–10 weeks. Ideally, aim to leave plants to reach the 10-week mark for optimal flower maturity. Prepare to harvest up to 500g/m² in ideal conditions.

Outdoor Growing Tips

Out in the garden, Skunk #1 performs best in warmer climates. In this environment, you won’t have the luxury of controlling her revealing smell. Choose your spot wisely, and surround plants with a generous buffer of aromatic companion plants such as sage, lavender, and fragrant flowers. Skunk #1 is low-maintenance in outdoor locations; you won't have to intervene much to enjoy a good yield. Plants are usually ready to harvest at the end of September or the beginning of October and produce satisfying returns.
