Find out about the legal status of medical and recreational marijuana in Barbados. Is marijuana illegal? Better safe than sorry!

Beaches, cocktails and flying fish, Barbados has it all. But how about flying a bit yourself? Can you get high in Barbados? Can you get in trouble for smoking weed? Some locals would like to see cannabis legalized, but unfortunately this might be a while.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA IN BARBADOS

The medical use of cannabis is illegal in Barbados. There is no current medical marijuana program, but the government has toyed with the idea of possibly legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes.

RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA IN BARBADOS

The use of recreational use of cannabis is treated similar to the use of other drugs, like cocaine. All of these drugs are dealt with under the national constitution and can be punished by jail terms.

Being found cultivating, possessing, purchasing, selling, or consuming cannabis can lead to legal prosecution.

In 2016, some key leaders in Barbados openly spoke about their belief that cannabis should be decriminalized.

Minister of Education Ronald Jones, for example, took a firm stand that personal, non-violent recreational cannabis use should not amount to jail time.

Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite shared similar opinions. While he said he holds no strong opinion on cannabis use, he did mention that he believes that users or people found to possess small amounts of cannabis should be referred to treatment or rehabilitation rather than incarcerated.
