Find out about the legal status of medical and recreational marijuana in the state of Alaska. Is marijuana illegal? Better safe than sorry!

MEDICAL MARIJUANA IN ALASKA

Medical marijuana is legal for patients with a prescription from a licensed physician in Alaska since 1998.

The qualifying conditions to become a medical marijuana patient in Alaska include:

  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV

Any chronic or debilitating disease or treatment of diseases which produce one or more of the following:

  • Cachexia (wasting syndrome)
  • chronic or severe pain
  • severe nausea
  • seizures (including characteristic of epilepsy)
  • persistent muscle spasms (including characteristic of multiple sclerosis)

RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA IN ALASKA

Possession of small amounts of cannabis for personal usage is legal in Alaska.

Although it is legal to grow your own pot in Alaska, you can have only up to 4 oz (113 grams) of weed in the privacy of your own home. The law states that you can have up to 1 oz (28 grams) on you in public, but more will certainly get you in trouble.

Getting caught with 1-4 oz can lead to up to 1 year in jail and/or a fine up to $1,000. Carrying even more than that might get you a whopping jail sentence of up to 5 years.

We are not aware of any possible law changes in the (near) future in Alaska regarding medical and/or recreational cannabis.
