Find out about the legal status of medical and recreational marijuana in the state of Maryland. Is marijuana illegal? Better safe than sorry!

The State of Maryland legalized their medical marijuana program in 2014. The program allows medical marijuana patients with a recommendation from a licensed physician to obtain a Medical Marijuana Card issued by the state of Maryland.

With this card, the patients can then purchase their medicine from one of the licensed dispensary that have opened up in the middle of 2017. The first medical marijuana is said to be available in the fall of 2017.

The qualifying conditions to become a medical marijuana patient in Iowa include:

  • Anorexia
  • Cachexia (Wasting syndrome)
  • Chronic pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Seizures (including those characteristic of epilepsy)
  • Severe and persistent muscle spasms
  • Severe chronic pain
  • Severe nausea

Possession of small amounts of cannabis (up to 10 grams) for personal usage has been decriminalized in Maryland.

Although possession of small amounts of cannabis is decriminalized, you might still get a fine of up to $100 if you get caught and it's your first offense. But if you get caught using cannabis in public, you will most likely end up paying up to $500.

A second offense is still seen as a Civil Offense and is good for a fine of up to $250 and any next time it would be another $500.

Getting caught with more than 10 grams is a little bit more serious though. Anything between 10 grams and 50 lbs (1417 grams) is seen as a misdemeanor and might land you in jail for up to a year and get you a fine of up to $1,000.

Getting caught with even more than 50 lbs is seen as a felony and might land you in jail for up to 5 years and a fine of up to a whopping $100,000.

We are not aware of any possible law changes in the (near) future in Maryland regarding medical and/or recreational cannabis.
