Find out about the legal status of medical and recreational marijuana in India. Is marijuana illegal? Better safe than sorry!

India maybe has the longest history with cannabis we know of. Cannabis has been used for traditional use for thousands of years, but unfortunately this does not mean that in modern times the stand on cannabis prohibition is only positive in India.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA IN INDIA

The production, sale and possession of any form of medicinal marijuana products are illegal in India.

RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA IN INDIA

Possession of cannabis in India is currently technically illegal, unless it is meant for some specific traditional preparations. In reality you will find cannabis almost everywhere in India, as it is being grown locally in many places throughout India.

India is famous for its production of charas and this is currently still being made in India. However, according to the law, a kilogram of marijuana charas will end you up in jail for 10 years.

The one thing that is legal in India is Bhang, which then should only consist of cannabis leaves and seeds. In reality, Indian people prepare their Bhang Lassi not just with leaves and seeds, but usually this is rich of proper bud.

We are not aware of any possible law changes in the (near) future in India regarding medical and/or recreational cannabis.
