Growing cannabis is a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, most of us live in areas where cannabis is still illegal, meaning we have to be very secretive about where and how we decide to grow. That’s where guerrilla growing comes in.
If you decide to start your own guerrilla grow, you’re probably wondering what strains can be left to fend for themselves yet still deliver great results. Here are 10 strains that are perfect for growing guerrilla style.
Frisian Duck is the perfect outdoor strain. It’s hardy, resilient, and, thanks to it’s uniquely shaped leaves, doesn’t look like a traditional cannabis plant. This makes Frisian Duck ideal for guerrilla growers as the strain is a little less likely to attract unwanted attention.
Indoor growers love to pamper their plants with nutrients, fertilizers, and more. But remember, cannabis is actually a resilient plant that needs little more than water and good soil to survive. Frisian Duck really proves this and can produce great harvests, especially outdoors.
This duckling grows into big trees reaching up to 2.5m tall, flowers in roughly 8 weeks, and is best harvested in early October/May, depending on which hemisphere you’re growing in. If all goes well, you’ll be rewarded with a heavy harvest of nice, aromatic buds that produce an uplifting yet relaxing euphoria.
Timewarp, also known as Texada Timewarp, is a strain originating from Vancouver Island, BC. It is rumored to have been bred from landrace strains from the area. The final product is an easy-to-grow strain with slightly more indica characteristics.
The fact that Timewarp originates from Vancouver tells us a lot about how this strain will perform in an outdoor guerrilla grow. Vancouver has a moderate oceanic climate with dry, hot summers and wet, cold winters. If Timewarp was able to grow natively in these conditions, chances are it’ll do fine where you live.
Thanks to its indica-like physical characteristics, Timewarp won’t grow as large as some of the other strains on this list. While that might result in a smaller harvest, it also minimizes the chances of someone spotting it, which is always a bonus when growing guerrilla style.
Northern Lights needs little introduction. Being an incredibly potent indica variety, Northern Lights has captivated smokers all across the globe. This autoflowering variety offers all the glory of the original Northern Lights, but in a compact auto package.
If you have no choice but to grow guerrilla style, this strain is a great option. Besides producing very aromatic and flavorful buds, Northern Lights Autoflowering is also very hardy and easy to grow. Remember, the original Northern Lights is already a very resilient strain. Cross that with ruderalis, found growing naturally in the harsh climates of Siberia and Northern Kazakhstan, and you’ve got a strain that can deal with almost all kinds of stress.
Besides being super robust, Northern Lights Autoflowering is also quick to flower, reaching harvest time in as little as 9 weeks from seed. Plus, the fact that it reaches a height of only 120cm is great for guerrilla growers looking to keep their plants away from prying eyes.
Guerrilla’s Gusto is a strain developed in Spain with, as the name suggests, the guerrilla grower in mind. It is believed to be bred from a variety of Indian cannabis plants. The resulting seed was then bred with a Skunk variety to make for a super hardy and potent strain.
Like its Indian ancestors, Guerrilla’s Gusto grows short and stocky. It can mature in as little as 7 weeks and is ready by September/March if the conditions are right. Thanks to its Skunk genetics, Guerrilla’s Gusto is also very resilient to tough conditions (be it a drought or heavy rainfall) and naturally resistant to pests. Again, this is ideal for guerrilla growers who have little opportunity to pamper their plants.
Come harvest time, Guerrilla’s Gusto will leave you with a good amount of thick, heavy buds. The smoke will induce a happy, relaxing stone.
We’ve previously referred to Trans Siberian as the ultimate “stealth plant.” Here’s why: This strain grows super small, reaching only about 80cm, and matures in about 9 weeks from seed. This makes Trans Siberian arguably one of the best strains for guerrilla growers.
Trans Siberian is a cross between Auto #1 and White Russian. Auto #1 is a descendant of the famous Lowryder, which is where Trans Siberian gets its short stature and hardiness from. White Russian, on the other hand, is a potent hybrid combining White Widow and AK-47 genetics. Bring all of that together and you get Trans Siberian, a tiny little powerhouse that still produces some great bud.
The only downside to growing such small plants is that they might struggle in areas with very strong winds and rain. If you live in an area with this kind of climate, make sure you find a guerrilla spot that’s well protected from the elements.
If you despise guerrilla growing because all it’s ever gotten you is a few ounces of bunk weed, don’t give up just yet. Try using Hindu Kush in your next guerrilla grow and you might just end up with some decent buds.
Hindu Kush plants originate from the mountain range of the same name. Here, they’ve grown naturally at the foothills of the mountains for centuries, unshaken by the cold, arid climate. So, it goes without saying that this is a really strong strain that's more than capable of fending for itself.
Besides being super hardy, Hindu Kush is revered by cannabis connoisseurs all around the world for its unique taste and strong effects. While you won’t have much control over how your guerrilla plants grow, you can rest assured that your Hindu Kush harvest will be worth the 7 weeks it takes for these plants to flower. Given the right conditions, they can produce some dank, resinous nuggets without any added nutrients or boosters.
Frisian Dew is one of the parent strains of Frisian Duck. Bred from Super Skunk and Purple Star, this strain is a solid and versatile hybrid that’s easy to grow in a variety of different conditions. Frisian Dew does particularly well outdoors, which is why it’s well-suited to guerrilla growing.
This strain takes roughly 8 weeks to flower, which is another bonus for antsy guerrilla growers. Frisian Dew is a medium-sized variety, yet still produces very good harvests. If possible, visit your plant once it has developed a few branches and try topping the main cola. This will encourage it to grow multiple colas, ultimately leaving you with multiple, bigger buds.
Come harvest time, Frisian Dew will reward you with a very decent harvest of big flowers that produce nicely balanced effects that are simultaneously stimulating and relaxing.
Sometimes, you can figure out all you need to know about a strain from its name. Confidencial OG (Spanish for “private” or “confidential”) is a short strain that’s perfect for stealthy guerrilla grows.
Confidencial OG is another Spanish strain; it was developed using OG Kush and Afghan genetics. The result is a compact cultivar with very obvious indica traits; broad, dark green leaves, a short, stocky build, and tight internodes. Confidencial OG flowers in just under 8 weeks and can be harvested in September/March.
This strains produces big harvests of around 600g/plant. This is great news for guerrilla growers as it guarantees a nice amount of bud by the end of summer.
Speedy Chile is a cross between Green Poison and Chile Indica. The result is a solid hybrid with slightly more indica genes. It produces solid buds with nice aromas that make for a smooth, relaxing smoke.
If you’re planning a guerrilla grow, we highly recommend Speedy Chile for a number of reasons. First of all, it flowers in just 6 weeks. Secondly, this strain produces great harvests of around 500g/plant, although this might be slightly less if you’re not using any special nutrients or training techniques.
Finally, we love Speedy Chile for its manageable size. This strain tends to grow to only 100–170cm, which is great for stealthy growing.
+Speed Autoflowering is another great autoflowering strain ideal for growing outdoors. While auto strains have received a lot of criticism, this strain proves that they can produce great bud despite their small stature.
+Speed Autoflowering is ready to harvest within just 7 weeks and can produce up to 150g/plant. Given it usually doesn’t reach above 90cm, this is a very decent yield. Finally, thanks to its strong genetics that combine Critical Mass and Speed Devil 2, you can rest assured that this strain will do just fine if left unattended out in the wild.
